Summer Time

Whoa it's been a LOOOOONNNGGG time since I have been here! And I actually have a short time to spend here this morning. I have soooooo much to share and such little time. It's the story of my life right now! I need at least an extra 4 hours a day. I use to have those hours at night but now they are consumed with sleep and sometimes work. I am so exhausted by the end of the day I can't keep my eyelids opened....

It's hard to believe with the summer we are having (cool weather) that it's half way over. We have only been to the beach 2 or 3 times -however we have been busy with other very fun family things (del mar horse races, farmers markets, pool fun, parks, bbq's with friends, weddings, enjoying and rooting for Uruguay in the World cup was a HUGE highlight, amazing house parties, birthday parties, family gatherings and seeing old friends).

I'll try to get back to post pictures and give some more details on these fun events that go on all summer.

Just wanted to get here and post something to roots and sol, it's been way too looooooonnnggggg......

A late Father's Day Gift Guide

For those who know me well, know that I don't plan ahead much. In fact I run a little late on anything from appointments to meetings to getting out the door in the morning. Not my strongest quality yet a strong characteristic of mine. So here it is, my late father's day gift guide.

This is one of my favorites I came across on my search. It's perfect for us San Diegans that like to BBQ at the beach and parks; it's called the Bodum Frykate Portable Charcoal Grill. It's even cute and comes in different colors.
Bodum Fyrkat 13.4-Inch Portable Charcoal Grill, Orange

One of my amazing Mom group friends, Erin, has a very informative and exciting blog which specializes in books, especially childrens. She included a great list of books of daddy approved & daddy themed books...check them out here (and her blog).

For you whose husbands and fathers are crazy about soccer and the world cup (like my brothers and father) there are so many good options ranging in prices. Target is selling vintage world cup tees, unfortunately there is no Uruguay which is weird since they did win the World cup twice (1930 & 1950) and was where the first World cup was held.

Umbro's Uruguay shirt, they have others but just using this one as an example... oh and did I mention they just scored their second goal versus South Africa....GO URUGUAY!!!!!!!!
Here's a rockin' cool 1950 vintage USA soccer shirt!

How about tickets to go see Anthony Bourdain Live? Or lunch at Stone Brewery? I have never bought this for Peter but have heard these micro beer clubs or monthly beer clubs are pretty cool. And for the wine lover, forget the bottle or box go for the barrel.
And for the daddy that is super metro go for Kiehl's goodies.
Happy Father's Day to all the deserving daddies out there!

Does anyone have any input?? I am in the market of getting one of these chairs...I like the look of the

Cooper's Interpretation

So....I got the nod for the Miramonte Resort in the Desert this Memorial Day weekend and it was a PARADISE filled with lots of green manicured grass, Grapefruit and Lime trees plus an awesome room with 2 beds and a large marble floored bathroom which is nice to lay on when it gets stupid hot (which it tends to do in the Desert). I got to run amok and mark every tree, bush and croquet set on the grounds. Plus...I got to go away with my Mom/Dad and those 2 interlopers (V&T) who love to pull, prod, choke, kiss, torture and terrorize me. I am still a young dog, but these 2 little niƱas test me everyday.

So...back to the Chase of the Grapefruit balls...they would fall off the tree and were the perfect size (think of a bocce ball) as they were not the normal sized Grapefruit, I'm 11 pounds soaking wet, there's no way I could bring a mature Grapefruit back. M Peter, my old man, has got a killer arm and he made me run, A LOT. We hit it early in the AM, as Toby gets up at the crack of dawn. Anywho, I ran tons and it was a slice of heaven in the desert.

OK, expect more from me every now and again...a dog's voice needs to be read and heard!

Another Fab Escape

Yesterday we returned from yet another great adventure. We went to the Palm Springs area and stayed at the comfortable and impressive Miramonte Resort. One of the highlights was bringing Cooper with us, another advantage of this hotel is that it is dog friendly and Cooper was in heaven!
We swam, shopped, ate (here and here) and made new friends. We are so looking forward to going back very soon. Now, time to plan our next getaway....I don't think we will be going anywhere anytime soon but I'll daydream of our next getaway. Maybe here or here.

A few of my new favorite things

I have gotten some really kick ass swag lately....check'em out...

I had to hook Toby up with these super cute crocs....she dances around in them like Janet Jackson and there are times her little piggies do not touch the ground.

Here is a pair of my new kicks - love these comfy funky Puma's, my excuse... I need hip wheels for work...do we (all the ladies) ever need an excuse for new cute shoes? HELL NO!
Thank you Allison for a super special Mother's day gift....you are so KIND! I LOVE this necklace that I had with Valencia's name on it but I never got around to adding Toby's name and here it is...check out My Cose Belle's website for these custom made sweet necklaces.
Peter dialed me in with this funky fresh hat...we found it at this super cute boutique in Venice called Varga. I know these hats are trendy, but this one has a wider brim and oodles of personality...
Last time we were in Santa Monica we found this incredible store called Oxbow. It's a french surf company....LOVE the french style...Peter got himself this killer watch. He says it even smells good, which is weird...but he's happy and his hairy wrist does look very cool.
I didn't get anything from the boutique Mog & Rue but could see how it could become a fav if I lived in North County. The website doesn't do it justice so next time you're in Cardiff/Encinitas area pop your head in. There is also a super cute bra/undies/sexy lingerie store going out of business next door that is having sweet deals. And if you have kiddos, Magical Child is a few doors down.

Retail Therapy at it's best!

I love weddings...as long as it's not mine

This weekend we were honored to be invited to Taura and Scott's beautiful wedding in the amazing Malibu...this place was stunning. They were wed at Rancho del Cielo...by the same Rabbi that tied our proverbial knot... When we got married we only had met the Rabbi a few times to discuss our ceremony so at this wedding we had the opportunity to get to know him a little better....all I can say is that I was SHOCKED by things he was saying. Let me put it this way he was so UN-kosher by the very liberal and UN-rabbinical ideas that even Peter walked away with his jaw to the ground saying HOLY SHIT did he just say that?!!! Here's a few examples of the shockers...at one point he said "I belive in G-d, but I am a athiest"... amongst other talk such as drugs, sex and hot babysitters....you get my drift.....

Anyways, the wedding was one of the best we've been to, with some of the nicest and funnest people. Congrats Taura and Scott!

A few other highlights from our getaway weekend...

The girls dancing to a street singer/performer who was a cross between Regina Spektor & Colbie Caillat  - it was so fun seeing Toby getting so close to the performer and her dancing so super cute!

Going to the Venice Farmers Market and seeing Natasha McElhone, who plays Karen, Hank Moody's ex-girlfriend in Californication. She was so beautiful, humble and down to earth. It was a highlight because I love that show and she is just such a cool character.

The girls riding the ponies and just enjoying the best farmer's market in SoCal.

Thank you Santa Monica/Malibu/Venice and an extra HUGE thank you to my Mom for coming with us and helping watch the girls while we enjoyed ourselves at the wedding!

Now off to Palm Springs at the end of the week for another fun family getaway before it gets unbearably hot there....Enjoy your week!

The Book of Ruth, my book of truth

The jewish holiday Shavout is upon us, this holiday holds much meaning to me since it was 21 years ago that I had my Bat-Mitzvah (HOLY SHIT!) and we read the Book of Ruth during this holiday (how appropriate form me).

A little background on this holiday:
Shavuot began as a harvest festival, but it also commemorates the revelation at Sinai and the giving of the Torah. While Shavuot has few rituals associated with it, many Jews stay up all night studying Torah. Other customs include eating dairy foods and reading the Book of Ruth.
I don't consider myself religious but I do find that spiritualism and a sense of connection with myself and the ones I  love fill me soul. I found this description on the Book of Ruth - it is so right on for me and My Book of Ruth....

The religious truths found in this book relate more to practical life than to abstract theology. Loyalty, love, kindness, the value of persons, and the need to understand one another stand out. In the midst of the chaos then in the land, meaning could be found by returning to the first principles of simple truth. The book of Ruth tells us that no matter how bad things may be, goodness can exist, if we are willing to make the effort.

Harvest, eat, enjoy and love always!

You're in my Thoughts - Happy Birthday!

I have to give a shot out to my grandparents who have passed on. This past week would have been their birthday's.....I was lucky enough to have spent the last few years of my "Baba's" life so close to her. So in her memory I am posting this that I wrote for Toby, who was named after my mother's mom. Here are a few pieces from that letter:

“If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people.”

Thich Nhat Hanh quotes (Vietnamese Monk, Activist and Writer. b.1926)

Toby, I hope that you will always follow your dreams and aspirations, know that we will support you and guide you to live your fullest. We will teach the importance of empathy, sympathy and compassion to the people that are less fortunate than you - to always have an open heart and do the right thing for you and the others around you. Know whatever seeds you plant in life you will watch and flourish and they will be your legacy.

we found a poem that stood out for us - these are some of the things we truly hope for you in life:

I want you to be happy

I want you to be happy. I want you to fill your heart with feelings of wonder and to be full of courage and hope.

I want you to have the type of friendship that is a treasure - and the kind of love that is beautiful forever. I wish you contentment: the sweet, quiet, inner kind that comes around and never goes away.

I want you to have hopes and have them all come true. I want you to have a real understanding of how
unique and rare you truly are. I want to remind you that the sun may disappear for a while, but it never
forgets to shine. May the words you listen to, say the things you need to hear. And may a cheerful face
lovingly look back at you when you happen to glance in your mirror.

I wish you the insight to see your inner and outer beauty. I wish you sweet dreams. I want you to have times when you feel like singing and dancing and laughing out loud. I want you to be able to make your good times better and your hard times easier to handle. I wish I could find a way to tell you - in untold ways - how important you are to me.

Of all the things I’ll be wishing for, wherever you are and whatever I may do, there will never be a day in my life when I won’t be wishing for the best… for you.
   Anonymos

We have chosen the name Toby for you in the great honor of your great grandmother Baba. Toby means goodness in g-d, exactly how we knew Baba. How she would have loved your pulkas! She would probably have you start doing yoga or walking her usual 3 miles with her every morning! She loved her children, grandchildren and her great grandchild Valencia - the only one she met here physically but we know she is watching all the new little ones in the family and smiling upon all of us. She loved seeing us all together, it was her greatest joy. She was a women of strength, love and integrity. She prevailed hardships in life that we only hear about through history - some of the darkest bearings of life but she always shined rays of sun & love. She was a hero and we all hold the best and loving memories of her, for this Toby we named you after her!

do right to me baby

A friend recently said to me "I am not judging you for it"(which she was not...there was a looooong conversation before and after that comment), we were talking about me having to short sell our house which is a whole other subject and not what this post/blog is about....
I walked away feeling a few different things/emotions;

One: I appreciated her saying that to me (and I do respect her as a woman). I feel like I am constantly being judged in many aspects of my life. Most of the time I don't care. I am such a strong believer in I will do what is right for me and my family and you do what is right for you without judgment. I feel strong in my convictions that I will make the right decisions for us AND it won't be hurting anyone.

Two: It took me back to my early twenties, when I went "deep sea diving" into spiritualism. You know those days when you're searching for who you are, how you want to live your life, what kind of person you want to be.....I remember I spent some time being very mindful of my judgments and trying my hardest to live life not judging and just accepting, almost the "live and let live" philosophy. I now realize that those halcyon days of my 20s were probably some of my best sessions in self-searching and self-realization (or maybe it was just all the Roots Rock REGGAE by Bob Marley I was listening to :)- Well, it was sooo good for me and my soul/sol (hence the blog and all my other biz ventures use the key word "Sol" which means sun in Spanish but also means soul to me. More on my biz names in another post - I could go on and on here.)

What my friend said reminded me of the importance of living without judgment. It was one of those moments that made me to stop and check myself. Am I living my life without judgment? It is so liberating to love, accept and live without judgment. I think when you don't judge... you are free from your own slavery, preconceived notions and baggage. Try it. Try to be super conscious of your judgments. I bet you would be surprised how much you judge. I know I am....and this was just a reminder to go back to that space and spiritual place of when I was young and bring back the good of my soul searching when I was emerging and embracing who I am today.

Besos and thanks for reading and not judging...

Bob Dylan had it right:  Listen Here

Don't wanna judge nobody, don't wanna be judged,
Don't wanna touch nobody, don't wanna be touched.
Don't wanna hurt nobody, don't wanna be hurt,
Don't wanna treat nobody like they was dirt.

But if you do right to me, baby,
I'll do right to you, too.
Ya got to do unto others
Like you'd have them, like you'd have them, do unto you.

Don't wanna shoot nobody, don't wanna be shot,
Don't wanna buy nobody, don't wanna be bought.
Don't wanna bury nobody, don't wanna be buried,
Don't wanna marry nobody if they're already married.

But if you do right to me, baby,
I'll do right to you, too.
Ya got to do unto others
Like you'd have them, like you'd have them, do unto you.

Don't wanna burn nobody, don't wanna be burned,
Don't wanna learn from nobody what I gotta unlearn.
Don't wanna cheat nobody, don't wanna be cheated,
Don't wanna defeat nobody if they already been defeated.

But if you do right to me, baby,
I'll do right to you, too.
Ya got to do unto others
Like you'd have them, like you'd have them, do unto you.

Don't wanna wink at nobody, don't wanna be winked at,
Don't wanna be used by nobody for a doormat.
Don't wanna confuse nobody, don't wanna be confused,
Don't wanna amuse nobody, don't wanna be amused.

But if you do right to me, baby,
I'll do right to you, too.
Ya got to do unto others
Like you'd have them, like you'd have them, do unto you.

Don't wanna betray nobody, don't wanna be betrayed,
Don't wanna play with nobody, don't wanna be waylaid.
Don't wanna miss nobody, don't wanna be missed,
Don't put my faith in nobody, not even a scientist.

But if you do right to me, baby,
I'll do right to you, too.
Ya got to do unto others
Like you'd have them, like you'd have them, do unto you.

What?! How is it Wednesday already!?

My week has been CRAZY! Yesterday I woke up at 6am and didn't stop until 9pm. I worked ALL DAY! On my feet, back and forth, sweating and staying focused. It's kind of peculiar going back to work and taking care of a family both FULL TIME. Talk about juggling, driving, organizing and massive planning, HOLY MOLY!

Today was another similar day....except today I finished at 5:30 and went to the Corvette diner for dinner with the girls, Peter and my cousin and her new BOYfriend.....I finally got to meet the guy that she has been telling me all about. I am so happy for her. He seems to be a great guy, genuine and down to earth!

It's def taxing going out to dinner with a ONE year old, uggg I can't wait until she either actually sits to eat dinner or we can communicate back and forth. Whatever...I just can't wait until we can go out for dinner without playing defense from start to finish.  It is nice to walk away from the disaster zone we call our table though!

Off to prepare for another half crazy ass day tomorrow!

9 by Design

I am blissed out with this:

9 by design

maybe it's because I want to have a big family and I love the idea of loving the chaos of having a big family. Or maybe it's that Courtney and Bob think so out of the box it's inspiring and refreshing. Or maybe it's because they are so hip, funky and creative.

Their designs, home fashion and ideas are breathtaking and phenomenal...check them out on Bravo.

Mommy turns to working woman

In some areas of my life I feel confident and comfortable, mostly when it comes to being a mom and a wife. but in others I am a work in progress....

I recently have taken the plunge in going back to work...but for myself. I was never good at having a boss, taking orders, being on time, going to work parties - it's just not for me. I like the more freelance, entrepreneur, working for myself taking risks kind of gig.  I wanted something that I can still be a mom and be with my kids and make my own schedule, be my own boss, throw my own parties, and answer to my self and to my husband (because he kicks ass) but with that comes pressure, headaches, responsibility, accountability and freedom.

Anyways, today I decided I better make some more cold calls - not my forte but hey it comes with the territory. I have to boast, my first call was very interested and I hope to close the deal tomorrow (my hubby wants me to "eat what I kill" or some salesy BS. If anything, it taught me a lot. This cold call just might have given me a little bit of confidence to make a few more cold calls in the coming days. How many "YES" will it take to make me a little more confident in business?
